Coke has been made on the Monckton site at Royston near Barnsley in South Yorkshire for over 125 years utilising a workforce drawn from the local communities and combining their traditional skills with coal mined from nearby Maltby colliery.

Coke is produced using high temperature carbonisation, a process of heating coal in the absence of air, a 20 hour process where by-products such as Benzole, Tar and ammoniacal liquor are removed, leaving a coke with a high carbon content.
Typical chemical composition:
+ 86% Carbon, - 6% Ash, -2% Volatile Matter, - 12% Moisture, -2% Sulphur
Metallurgical Coke
Our coke is available in a variety of sizes up to 90mm, to suit a wide range of customer requirements in the UK and Europe. These range from carbon based chemical producers and specialist steel producers, to Blacksmiths and Farriers.
The coke is also used in brick making, soda ash manufacture, electrical earthing, cathodic protection, roofing insulation, the manufacture of Titanium Dioxide and as a filtration medium.
Domestic Smokeless Fuels
Two fuels, Sunbrite and Cosycoke are produced and distributed for domestic heating through members of the Approved Coal Merchants Scheme.
