HARGREAVES Services has been named Durham and Wearside Company of the Year in the region's biggest and best business awards. Hundreds of members of the North-East business community cheered on the Esh Winning company at a black tie dinner and ceremony at the Ramside Hall Hotel, near Durham. This was the third sub-regional heat of the North-East Business Awards, which is organised by The Journal and its Teesside sister paper the Evening Gazette.

As sub-regional Company of the Year, Hargreaves will go on to compete with the winners from the Northumberland and Tyneside heat and the Tees Valley heat for the overall regional prize at the grand final at Hardwick Hall near Sedgefield on May 25.

The top award caps a landmark year for Hargreaves. It has expanded strongly over the last 11 years, growing from a haulage firm into a provider of transport and support services to the energy and waste sectors, and in November it floated on the Alternative Investment Market. Its maiden interim results anounced a 100% rise in both turnover and profit largely due to its takeover of The Monckton Coke & Chemical Company last year.
